My Journey
I have used my art as Protest for the last several centuries with images of family/cultural history using collage. This current series of paintings of “fighters or abstracted figures in physical conflict with each other addresses current politics and state of our union and the inner anger I feel when I see injustices and cruelty. Within the work I am asking questions of who is attacking and who is defending; what happened before this freeze frame moment and what happens afterwards based on positioning and trajectory of movement of figures. Many of the figures are re-used with a different opponent to prove themselves as warriors and to speak of an endless struggle of survival that is required.
Black and Indigo color dominate to create faceless, flat, minimalist images that will accentuate the movement of lines, the creation of negative space and the content of the interactions of the two figures.
Taijichuan is a martial arts practice that I follow and internalize. I wanted to create “movement within the stillness” as an application for living in conflict and resolving conflict within oneself and giving way to the outer world. The use of martial arts, and deep wisdom based on observation and practice of eastern philosophy used in the titles of each painting help to explain another way of thinking about the use of mind, energy and force. The seemingly perpetual cycles of human conflict, injustices and suffering that exist and will exist within me and that exist in the world can be met and embraced with a soft force that enlivens the life force for the good regardless of the outcome.
